A Meaningful Plea: The Best Thing to Ask Allah (s.w.t.) for in Your Du’a.

How do you make du’a?

When making a du’a, we would probably make a long list of everything that we desire. We would squeeze in as many of our wishes as possible in our du’a, making sure nothing gets left behind. However, there are also times where we don’t know what to ask for, especially when trials hit us from all angles of life.

When this happens, what should we do?

There is a short but powerful du’a that was shared by Dr Yasir Qadhi in his recent talk with Faith Events, entitled Noble Sacrifice: Drawing Wisdom from the Struggles of Our Prophet (s.a.w.).

A short but powerful du’a.

It was narrated that one day, Al-Abbas (r.a.), the uncle of Rasulullah (s.a.w.) came to him and requested for a special du’a

Rasulullah (s.a.w.) said, “O my uncle, say:  اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَافِيَةَ (Allahumma inni as’aluka al’afiyah)

Translation: Oh Allah, I ask you for ‘afiyah

Al-Abbas (r.a.) thought about this for a while, and then he came back after a few days, saying, “Ya Rasulullah (s.a.w.), this du’a seems a little short. I want something big.”

The Prophet (s.a.w.) then said, “My dear uncle, ask Allah for ‘afiyah for Wallahi, you cannot be given anything better than ‘afiyah.”

[Riyadh As Salihin, Sunan At-Tirmidhi]

What is ‘afiyah?

‘Afiyah is a word that refers to overall well-being. This can include health, wealth and safety from anything that may be deemed to be harmful. As we face the hurdles in life, we should always make du’a for all of our affairs to be smooth-sailing. Asking Allah (s.w.t.) for ‘afiyah means we are asking Him to save us from any afflictions in dunya and akhirah.

We may not be able to stop tragedies from happening, but we can always use the strongest weapon in our arsenal, du’a, to protect ourselves from any harm that may afflict us.

Now that we have learned the benefit of this du’a, let’s include it in our daily routine. May Allah (s.w.t.) grant us a life of ‘afiyah, where we are protected from harm, worries and anguish. Ameen.
